Perennial, woody at base, 10-25 cm high, flowering stems simple or branched, glabrous, glaucous. Leaves deltoid-cordate or ovate-cordate, amplexicaul, acute at apex. Petals pink, white or creamy yellow, 5-9 x 2-4 mm. Filaments slender, loosely connate or free, not toothed; anthers apiculate. Inflorescence elongating in fruit. Ovary 2-locular, each loculus 1-2-ovuled. Fruiting pedicels erect, ascend-ing, 4-7 mm. Siliculae ovate, c. 7x6 mm; septum 6x2 mm; wings irregularly and variably toothed, 1-2 mm, sinus 1-2 mm; style 2-4 mm. Seeds 1-2, slightly mucilaginous. Fl. 5-6. Rocky slopes and rock crevices, 1300-2400 m.

Transcaucasia, Greece. Ir.-Tur. element. Ae. cordatum is one of the most scat-tered species in Turkey. It is most variable in habit, flower colour, petal size, leaf size and fruit shape. The most notable variant is the very small leaved (c. 3 mm long) plant with short branches that was described by Boissier (Fl. Or. Suppl. 61, 1888) from Ulu Da. as var. pichleri.
