C. peregrina L., Mant. Alt. 204 (1771). Syn: C. lanuginosa Lam., Encycl. 1:577(1785). Ic: Bot. Mag.: t. 1257(1810).
  Hispid biennial. Stem erect-ascending, to 50-70(-l00) cm, striate, leafy. Basal and lower cauline leaves ovate, obovate or oblong, obtuse, 4-11 x 3-5 cm, crenate to 2-crenate, attenuate into often winged petiole to 10cm; median oblong, upperlanceolate, sessile, shortly decurrent on stem, acuminate. Flowers solitary or in clusters of 2-3, sessile, axillary in a ± dense spike or a still' panicle. Calyx lobes lanceolate. 7-10(-12) x 2-3 mm, acute, ± dentate, ± patent, ½ x corolla, twice as long as obconical ovary, strigose. Corolla broadly campanulate, to 15 x 30 mm, divided to ½ glabrous, bright to deep blue. Style filiform. Stigmas 3, long. Cap- sule obconical, 4-5 x 4 mm, hispid, opening by 3 ± median pores. Seeds small, 0.6 x 0.2 mm, oblong, brown, shiny. 2n = 26. Fl. 6-9. Streamsides, moist places, 270-1220 m.
  Type: Described (surely in error) from C.B.S. (Cap Bon Spei) inter semina capensia excrevit (Hb. Linn. 221 48, photo!).

  Cyprus, Lebanon. E. Medit. element. Allied to C. primulifolia Brot. from S. Portugal. Tristram's record of this species from Palestine (see Post (ed. Dinsm.), Fl. Syria 2:168, 1935) is probably referable to C. peregrina.
